At 71 years of age it was tiring. The state has recently erected signs explaining the history of the area and some of the plants and animals there. Between Darling Run and Blackwell there are several comfort stations but no access areas. We managed to get as far as the Jersey Mills post office and then decided to head back. I can’t remember the exact year that my husband and I began riding mountain bikes. Everything came together: the weekend of 19 October was perfect weather wise and the fall colors were spectacular. Most of these roads are driveways and backroads. This trail was the best Rail Trail we have been on in terms of trail condition, scenery, trail facilities, access areas and towns with trail services. We are so glad we made the extra effort to get to Slate Run and the Wolfe General Store. Saw a bear. The Pine Creek trail is our best to date. The fourth overnight trip was the Allegheny Highlands Trail from Cumberland to just south of Pittsburg, PA (121 miles). The iced tea was refreshing! We generally ride the section from Ansonia to Blackwell in spring and in the fall. Our first “overnight trip” was on the Erie Canal Trail beginning in Lockport. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Park, there are incredible views of the gorge. The 62 miles flowed so smoothly that we reached the end before we knew it. About three miles on other side of Brevard, you can take a short detour to Cathey's Creek Falls. I was surprised at the number of bird species on the trail. We started after 10 am and, happily, the steep walls and trees along the trail provide a lot of shade, except on a notorious stretch north of Cedar Run that was sunny on the way up and on the way back. Best nearby. The trail is an awesome ride through what is without doubt the most scenic part of north-central Pennsylvania. It was a great service and our truck was waiting for us when we got there. Our second trip was on the Ohio Erie Canal trail from Bolivar, Ohio north to Cleveland, a three day 100 mile trip. It has grown to 1,833 acres from its original 350 acres. All the other people we passed were very pleasant and followed good bike etiquette. I rode a gravel bike with 32mm tubeless tires which was the petfect choice for the unpaved trail. First time riding this. The next 12.5 miles to a store at Blackwell travel through the most remote section of the gorge, passing only the Tiadaghton Campground. Going North on Route 220, take a right onto Route 44 Main Street into town. The first 26 miles from Wellsboro Junction to Blackwell includes the entire PA Grand Canyon. The owners of the campground are very nice and campsites along the creek are perfect for tents or small trailers if you don't need electricity. The pools are very deep and the water is cool and refreshing. There are many trail parking areas along the way. One mile from the Outfitters is access to the rail trail along Pine Creek. You may want to bring a filter. The second day we did the remainder of the trip which was about 32 miles or so to the Jersey Shore. From RT 6 as you enter Milford, go right (southwest) on 7th street (set odometer here) then right again on a road that may be signed: RT 2001 or Milford Rd. We started at Cedar Creek Inn, a quaint (as in shared shower) B&B, which is just about halfway. There are no “real” roads coming in or out. Wellsboro offers additional lodging and food.. highly recommended to stay in Wellsboro. The trail was clear of debris and the surface was hard. So we brought our bikes and decided to try out the rail-trail. If you have not ridden it, put it on the must do list. On the first leg we rode from Waterville to Cammal Station and back. Rafting on the Rogue River is the ideal start to an all encompassing Oregon adventure vacation. He said they worked just fine. Excellent trail. we've already talked about coming back and riding the rest of it..the fall would be beautiful!! Access/facilities:
Trailheads are spaced at regular intervals. For all of its 62 miles the trail is consistent, very rideable and well maintained. The Sherwood Motel was reasonabel and had very nice personnel. 2.7 Big Creek Overlook - the stream can be seen down and to the right. Trail traffic was minimal during my Friday afternoon ride sometimes going 5-6 or more miles without seeing another soul heading the opposite direction. Regardless of the flat it was a great day, great trip and with great views. The trail is perfectly maintained, hard packed, no litter at all, in fact there are no trash cans either because of the heavy black bear population! Calling ahead for a reservation is a must. Book a room at any of the quaint motels in the area and wind your way through some of the best scenery the Grand Canyon of PA has to offer, especially in the fall. 2.5 Pine Rock Overlook. This is a very peaceful ride through the narrowest part of the canyon. We have ridden many rail trails and this one has to rank in the top 3 or 4. At about 2 miles, turn at the Cliff Park Inn sign on the left (east) side(there is also a sign at one mile, DO NOT TURN THERE) and follow this road until you see the symbol for the hiking trails then follow the dirt road to the parking area (Cliff Park Trailhead) where there is a map and a vault toilet (LAT,LON of parking place: lat=41.3039,lon= -74.8329(source: measured) (accuracy: exact) LINK TO GOOGLE MAP.) The trail follows right next to the Pine Creek crossing nice bridges back and forth over the creek. Its clear, swift creek and cool waters make for a beautiful day going with the flow of the natural spring, which pumps an average of 26,000 gallons per minute and is a cool 68 degrees year-round. Go 13.3 miles, take the Thomas St. exit, and turn left onto Thomas St. Go 0.2 mile, and turn right onto Railroad St. Go 0.2 mile, and turn left into the parking lot. There are lots of restrooms the first 20 or so miles out of Waterville and after that it gets a little rustic up through the Pa grand canyon which is unbelievably beautiful. I started from the Jershey Shore entrance and went to Black Walnut Bottom and back, which is roughly 56 miles round trip according to the map; however, it did not seem that long. One of our favorite rides was a two-day trip along the entire length. Head west on Route 6 a few miles and there is the Coachstop Inn, Antlers Inn and the Log Cabin Inn. 2.5 Pine Rock Overlook. Great views of Pine Creek, mountains......a few bridges to cross. The trail is in great shape. I encourage all trail supporters to spend some time in the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania for a truly memorable trip. From there we saw it was just a short distance to Slate Run and we hoped we would be able to find some food at Slate Run, as it was just past noon. We are from the Pittsburgh area and the GAP trail is our home trail in fact we have done the trip to Washington 2 years ago. We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast at the Cedar Run Inn, joining friends who stay there annually for a canoe weekend. Rode south the first day to Waterville and back on hybrid and road bike. Expect to see a number of people kayaking and making their way down the creek. After 14 miles, you'll see a small parking area on the right side of the road just before a bridge. I got off and rode the parallel road to make better time in some places on that end. The bottom swimming hole is larger than an Olympic size pool, so you can really swim. Around this point, I saw larger groups of cyclists and walkers, many with kids. Went to two craft brewery restaurants...one in Mansfield the other in Wellsboro. I should also mention that the first 25 miles or so out of Wellsboro are reasonably isolated with few rest stations and no options to stop at a convenience store as you have leaving Jersey Shore, so be sure to have some food and plenty of your preferred beverage to get you through this section. On the way out and back we stopped at several lovely locations that afforded us spectacular views. It's a beautiful ride through one of the most scenic areas in the Northeast. I tried this trail last year, on the way home from the Great Allegheny Passage, in a heavy rain wearing a poncho. This 63 mile trail is best described by dividing it into 2 sections. When we come again we'll look into lodging at Slate Run or Cedar Run too. The gravel requires more effort than asphalt, and the fact that it is almost completely level requires non-stop peddling, which gets tiring. This 3-, 4- or 5-day Rogue River whitewater rafting journey down the 40 miles of this scenic waterway in southwestern Oregon, takes you through the storied Siskiyou Mountains, explored for centuries by Indians, trappers and gold prospectors. Slate Run store had great deli sandwiches and also a nice gift shop. Distance from UCF: 45 minutes to an hour; 45 miles. I only wish that I was 25 years old to enjoy what they will do in the future. One thing I would like to point out: the southernmost trail entrance at Jersey Shore is NOT on route 220. Just 25 miles east of downtown Asheville, Catawba River tumbles down, cascading into a series of waterfalls that, together, create a 100-foot scenic beauty in the Pisgah National Forest. The Pine Creek Trail runs along the beautiful Pine Creek at the bottom of the gorge for approximately 62 miles from Ansonia, right off of scenic Route 6 down to Jersey Shore on Route 220. I went the wrong direction the first time I went. The scenery is terrific. All water is routed under the trail. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October.
